Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin: What's the Difference?
If your skin feels tight, flaky, rough or just isn't looking as glowy as you'd like, you might assume you have dry skin. But here's something I want all of my clients to know: dry skin and dehydrated skin aren't the same thing.

And living in Arizona? Understanding the difference can make a big difference in how you care for your skin.
So, What's the Difference?
Let's start with dry skin.
Dry skin is generally considered a skin type. It means your skin naturally produces less oil, or sebum, than other skin types. Because oil helps support your skin's protective barrier, dry skin may feel rough, tight, flaky or more sensitive.
Dehydrated skin is different. Dehydration means your skin is lacking water—not oil. And here's the important part: any skin type can become dehydrated, including oily and combination skin.
That's why someone can have oily skin and still feel tight or look dull and have noticeable fine lines. Their skin may be producing plenty of oil but still not have enough water.
Why Arizona Can Make Things Tricky
If you live in the West Valley, you already know our climate can be tough on skin. Arizona's hot, dry air can contribute to moisture loss, and air conditioning can make things even more challenging. Spending time in the sun, swimming and frequent cleansing can also leave skin feeling dry or irritated.
And while we may not have the traditional cold-weather winter that other parts of the country experience, our dry climate means hydration is something we should think about year-round.
Your skin may be telling you it needs more moisture when you notice:
Tightness after cleansing
Flaking or rough texture
Dullness
More noticeable fine lines
Increased sensitivity or irritation
Makeup that doesn't seem to sit quite right
These can be signs that your skin needs some extra hydration and barrier support.
So, What Can You Do?
First, don't assume that adding more products is always the answer. Your skin needs the right products for its specific needs.
If your skin is dry, you may benefit from richer creams or moisturizers designed to support your skin barrier. If your skin is dehydrated, incorporating hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin can help attract and retain water in the skin. Creams and ointments can also be more effective than lighter lotions for very dry skin.
And don't forget the basics: use a gentle cleanser, moisturize regularly and wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.
Most importantly, listen to your skin. Your skincare routine shouldn't be exactly the same all year long. Your skin's needs can change with the weather, your lifestyle, your age and even your stress levels.
